2007-06-23 - #81 Undergoing total refit
Posted by mainesail.
Hi, I'm the guy who was given #81 3 years ago-
time for a total refit so it can go another 50 years.
She's basically empty and 3/4 wooded. Plan to,
replace last keelbolt and a couple of floors, seal
with Smith penetrating epoxy, fair, refasten as
necessary, recover decks with dynel, total re-finish-
I'm exhausted just thinking about it. I'd like to be
in touch with other owners about the things that
really work on their boats, and if close enough,
perhaps, come visit-I'm in Camden Maine.
Appreciate any and all replies.
Thanks, Will

Posted by Jim.
Still About is alive and well in MA. Her asking price
is 3000.00 US. Her 9.9 was serviced last year and
runs fine according to Nancy Taylor. Her tandem
trailer needs two tires but is travelable with that.
You can Email Nancy but use "Still About" in the
subject so her spam program doesn't delete your

2006-04-29 - Center Board Replacement
Posted by Jim.
For the "what its worth department" I thought I'd
pass this on to those considering replacing their
centerboards. I replaced Arapaho's a couple of
years ago and a had it jam last season while I was
pulling the boat for the year. I had to pry it out with
a come-a-long, four foot pry bar and sledge
hammer. The culprit was the iron shoe and the old
iron ballast. The iron on both items was shelling off
due to many years in salt water and just locked up
(pinched) the board. I spend some time on my
stomach in the bilge with a rasp to cut the shelling
off but apparently not enough or maybe it was just
a futile effort. My board is fine but I am going to
pour a lead disc in the bottom of the board and
throw away the iron shoe. I'm going to glass in the
board edge that was releived for the old shoe
sections. I'll also narrow the new board to give
even more clearance. I am willing to run the risk of
a rattle in the trunk at hull speed to avoid the 5
hour extraction again.

2006-04-24 - Centerboard Trunk Repair
Posted by jewellbarber.
Well, the time has come for our dear Wilhelmina
(formerly Emma Peel) to head to the spa for a few
months to have her centerboard trunk rebuilt. I
thought I might pose a few questions to the crew
here.
First of all, I'll issue a plea for advice and moral
support. Looking at the photo section, I see
someone has been through this... Was it Arapaho?
Do you have any words of wisdom to help get
through the process? Did you find any books or
other resources to be particularly helpful
references? Any particular time, money, or knuckle-
saving tricks you found helpful? Thanks for any and
all assistance!

I have a 1962 C27 and some of the glued seams
have opened up. I have most of the available info
on construction from old Yachting magazine
articles, Woodenboat articles, to Cy Hamlin's Design
book. But there is little written on the repair of this
type of hull construction either small or large
repairs that I am aware of. I would be interested in
the Associations repair info. "We can guide anyone
through these repair processes regardless of the
extent of the maintenance needed. That's what this

in a submitted news item and excited for a

Ouch! what happen? Snap the extension off? If you
have the pieces you might try an aluminum foundry
using the old one as a pattern. If not too bad of a
break you might even get it welded. A new one
would give a better peace of mind. Not sure where
Farnham had them cast origianlly but most likely
they were not a stock item. - Jim V
2005-11-07 - How do you fill the water tank?
Posted by coot.
Hello, I have recently purchased a 1968
Amphibicon. It is a fiberglass hull and I have
located what I believe has to be the water tank,
located underneath the cabin step and floor board.
But the only screws I can find just spin and don't
seam to do anything. Also this tank has a leak next
to the outlet hose (to the sink). What would be the
best way to fix this? Thanks everyone!

FOR SALE
This well preserved fresh water boat is on a tri axle
trailer stored inside but dissassembled for
refinishing. The hull has been stripped and coated
with one coat of West Epoxy. There are four sails,
line, two anchors, etc. Will sell for $3,750 -- less
than the value of the trailer which would hold a
larger boat. The boat (Caprica) is located in Flint,

I have up loaded a couple of pictures of Still About
hull #3. They are in the Photo section accessed at
the left on the main page. She sits on a tandem
trailer south of Boston, MA. For more information
contact Nancy Taylor at nancyt1963@yahoo.com.
She obviously needs some cosmetic help but her
seams look to be in good condition. Being on the
hard for a while I am sure some of the below water
line seams are opening up from drying out ashore.
A pretty easy fix. We can guide anyone through
these repair processes regardless of the extent of
maintenance needed. That's what this association is
all about - friendly help to preserve these fine
ladies.
It is also my sad duty to report that Mystic Rose
#33 has been pulled off line for serious re-building.
But she will be back in the water as soon as David
finishes her needed repairs.

Tim & Sarah,
Congrats on your new old boat.....we love our
Mystic Rose too!
We were in the Keys this past winter with our 17'
Daysailer II....but next season we will probably be
trucking Mystic Rose again south for a dip. Perhaps
put in south of Tampa at Bahia Beach Marina and
cruise south. Our favorite spot on the SW coast is
still Pelican Bay anchorage & Cayo Costa Is, even
though some of the beauty has changed due to the
hurricanes of last summer.
How far are you from coast and Tampa area?
Perhaps we can meet up this next season.

who has been in the loving care of John Hopkins
and Alix Leopold for the last 19 years.
She is a truly wonderful example of the history,
craftsmanship, and artistic creativity that go into
fashioning such a versatile wooden boat. We
absolutely adore her, and feel proud and honored to
be entrusted with her care. Once again, we would
like to extend our sincere gratitude to John and Alix
for giving us such a wonderful gift.
Any other Amphibicons out there (or their parents)

2005-04-29 - Trailering your Amphibicon
Posted by jewellbarber.
I've often read that one of the great benefits of the
Amphibicon (and hence the name, it would seem) is
that they are designed for trailerability. I was just
wondering how many people do in fact trailer them
regularly? Do you have any thoughts on locating a
trailer that would be appropriate? Any special
procedures required? I am currently trying to adopt
one of these great vessels, and would love any
input on the matter.

in spars or rig, will inspect again. Also several sails,
water tank and assorted parts- some woodwork is
salvageable. Also good rudder assembly, CB-

It is with a sad heart that I have decided that
"Idler" is beyond repair. The planks in her hull have
become soft and no amount of calking can stop all
of her leaks. I have owned her for 12 years, and
had a great time with her, but her condition is
terminal.
There are however many parts and accessories that
are in good condition that I would be willing to part
with. I have not even concidered how much
anything is worth, I don't know what the demand
for these items will be, but if you need something,
send me an email or give me a call and make me an
offer. kyle@tanawiremarker.com (573)796-3812
Some of the things I have that some of you may
want:

110% Genoa - used.
100% club footed working jib - good shape - SOLD
Spinnaker good shape
Main - good shape
Mast - good shape
Spinnaker pole
Hard top - good condition - needs paint, and varnish
Hatch cover -Oak/Lexan

04-12-20 - Amphibicon for Sale1

I recently bought a 1968 (I think) Amphibicon from
a young boat builder in Sedgewick, Maine. I bought
it on an impulse, and have since realized that the
annual costs and work associated with owning a
wooden boat requiring a mouring are more than a
young man (this one anyway) starting out in life
should take on.
The boat is in very good shape. The dead wood in
the keel has been replaced as have several keel
bolts. It has a 4 sails, jib, storm jib, genoa, and
mainsail. I comes with a mercury 9.9 2 stroke, Jack
stands, a stainless steel water tank.
What it needs is scaping and painting. Thats about
it.
It should make great boat for somebody, but sadly I
haven't the resources for that somebody to be me...
I'm selling it for 2750 for the time being, but I
would be happy to entertain possible partial trades
for daysailors or sailing dingys and other offers. I
could also do much of the scraping and painting this
spring for less than a boatyard might charge. Please
get in touch if interested.

The boat currently sits in Little Deer Isle.
2004-09-04 - Ondine's proud new owner/custodian
Posted by mainesail.
Hello all,
I am pleased to announce that Will Clark has
generously offered me stewardship of Ondine (Hull
#81), as described in his notice below. I am truly
honored to carry on the legacy of caring for Will's
grandfather's boat and expect it will be in my family
for years also.
Starting on August 22, I sailed her home to
Rockland, Maine from Long Island. Took almost a
week, lots of motoring- light winds. She proved
herself stable and strong and very reliable.
She needs alot of TLC- mostly refinishing, some
deck replacement and odds and ends, but she's
floating high, with a little assistance from Rule in
the bilge.
I'd like to be in touch with other owners,
particularly in Maine, to discuss their problems and
solutions and how other boats are outfitted etc., so
please get in touch.
Best to all for the fall season.

2002-06-22 - Farnham Butler's Life Celebrated!
Posted by destreet.
Hello All,
Just got a clipping form the local Ellworth American
newspaper indicating that the Great Harbor
Maritime Museum in the Old Firehouse at Northeast
Harbor will exhibit the life and work of Farnham
Butler relating to MDYY from 1934 until he retired
in 1970. "In addition to Butler's remarkable
documentation of his and the yards work, the
museum will explore the story through oral
histories, artifacts, photographs, workshops and
events. The show will open in late June and will be
available seasonally for two years."
This will be a nice added attraction to the
Amphibicon Rendezvous. THe Old Firehouse is right
on the main street above the harbor (up hill go
left).

Hello,
I am the owner A/C hull no. 35, we purchased her
some 10 odds years ago. Have put much time & $$$
and major improvements on board. I bit the bullet 2
years ago and WEST the complete hull with a
succesful result with the help of the GOD of FRP and
epoxy technology Maurice Gagnon ( yes, he exists
and lives in Montréal, my home town ). I now live in
South Florida and having her sent here in June.
Maurice and I still have lots to finish, mainly closing
up the c/b trunk ( popped a small leak in 2000).
I tore out the complete electrical system and
started from scratch and doing it all to code and
have gone the route of 12V breakers. Once finished,
it will have both an AC & DC system. We have
substituted the old style canvas pop top with a low
profile one we cold molded using balsa core and
FRP with epoxy, with recessed lexan skylights.... I
tell ya an elephant can stand on it. It is fitted with
hydraulic pistons which helps it rise to open & close
and and has 4 pcs of 1" S.S. polished tubes in the
corners of the top which are set in place once it's
rised and are set by hand turn set screws to lock
them into place, they slide through tube guides
fixed to the cockpit bulkhead and galley bulkheads
these mounts are fitted with white nylon that helps
reduce friction. Perhaps a marketable item, hmm. I
find the permanently raised cabin tops on the site
too boxy and beleive that it affects the handling in
closed quaters when a light wind is blowing, I recall
when we had the canvas pop top the boat was
difficult to handle in harbor.
I also scraped the tiller and installed an hydraulic
steering on a pedestal, nice touch..I might say.
Have a Yamaha 9.9 four stroke electric start,
another improvement we did was installing barn
style doors that contour the shaft of the engine and
prevents the muchly dreaded cavitation problem
these boats have....no more water ingress in the
lazarette.... and the boat looks as though it is fitted
with a sail drive engine....
Anyhoo.... I can go on and on...and on...but what I
would like to see are more A/C interior pics if
available...
I will try my best to locate the photos of our A/C
and post them on the site.
Have a happy and safe sailing season... and hope to
see more pics...
By the way ( here I go again ) if any of you want
advise or just chit chat about A/C's you can e-mail
me directly or contact me here...
